2degrees, one of New Zealand’s leading telecommunications companies, has announced plans to expand its 5G network to reach 50 townsmid next year. The company is committed to rolling out 5G at a fast pace, leveraging the longer-term 3.5 GHz spectrum rights allocatedthe government this year. This allocation has provided certainty and enabled the development of world-class mobile networks in New Zealand.

2degrees CEO Mark Callander expressed excitement about the expansion, stating that it would bring fantastic mobile connectivity to more communities in the regions. The initial rollout includes areas such as Nelson, Oamaru, Greymouth, Gore, and Masterton. Callander, who hails from Waikato, also hinted at upcoming announcements about areas to be covered next.

With Nelson being known as the sunshine capital of New Zealand, Callander anticipates interesting data usage patterns in the area, as people traditionally consume more data when it’s sunny. Furthermore, Callander lauded the progress made in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, where 2degrees’ 5G coverage is already well advanced. In addition to the expansion of its 5G network, 2degrees has also experienced growth in inbound roaming figures. August saw the highest number of international visitors roaming on its network since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Currently, 2degrees’ 5G is available in areas including Oamaru, Nelson, Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, Palmerston North, Whangarei, Rotorua, Masterton, Greymouth, Napier, Hamilton, Tauranga, Gore, and Cromwell.
