Pierre Morel, the director of the hit Taken, directs this new action movie. It focuses on Mason Pettits, a former Special Forces operative who’s retired and chafing a bit in a private security job. He’s hired for what promises to be a “milk run” as he has to bodyguard Claire Wellington, a journalist who was disgraced when her sources on a story turned out to be false. She’s trying to bounce back by traveling to the South American nation of Paldonia to interview its controversial president, Juan Venegas.
No sooner has the interview started than a military coup breaks out and the trio are stuck in the jungle. Now, they have to find a way to escape and survive, with Venegas wanting to get back his country, Claire wanting a story, and Mason just wanting to get out of this alive. It looks like a fun mix of action and comedy, so who is in it?

Mason is the former Special Forces expert, now a private security worker. He seems to miss the thrill of it all and stuck by how boring it is stuck behind a desk. He quickly learns to be careful what you wish for as he’s put on this wild adventure and trying to survive this madness.
Where have you seen John Cena before?
One of the biggest stars in pro wrestling history, John Cena has held practically every championship in WWE multiple times, headlined Wrestlemania and more. He’s also moved well into movies like Trainwreck, the Fast & Furious franchise, Blockers and the Peacemaker TV show. That makes him perfect to handle this film’s mix of action and comedy and make for a fun ride.
Once a top journalist, Claire’s career is ruined when she has to admit that several of her sources on a story lied to her. She’s trying to rebuild with this interview and sees the entire coup as a fantastic story. It looks like she naturally has some banter with Mason that could lead to romance.
Where have you seen Alison Brie before?
After roles on shows like Mad Men, Alison Brie broke out as the quirky Annie on the NBC comedy Community. She added to it with a starring role on the Netflix series GLOW and scores of films such as Horse Girl and Somebody I Used To Know. That gives her the experience for comedy that she should utilize well for this movie.
The president of this nation, Venegas sells himself as a charming figure who cares for his country. He seems honestly surprised at the coup, and the movie appears to play on how, during the escape in the countryside, Venegas realizes how badly he’s treated his people. He still has some charm and an odd bond with Mason and Claire to push the plotline.
Where have you seen Juan Pablo Raba before?
The model-turned-actor has been a familiar face on Colombian TV shows. He broke out in the U.S. playing Gustavo Gaviria in Netflix’s Narcos series. He’s also starred in Agents of SHIELD and Six and looks to take on his first major movie role here. He should be able to sell the charm and uniqueness of Venegas to make him a lovable rogue.
Mason’s wife appears to have a small role in the movie, just to establish how dull his life is. It may be that his crazy adventure convinces Mason he’s better off with her unless he and Claire hit it off well.
Where have you seen Alice Eve before?
The London-born actress has been a steady face in the UK for several years. Her big breakout in the U.S. was playing Carol Marcus in Star Trek: Into Darkness. She also starred in Bombshell and Haunting of the Queen Mary while playing roles in Iron Fist and The Power as well.
While his character name isn’t mentioned, it appears this is the leader of the coup. It’s up in the air whether he really wants to help this country or just get rid of Vengas to become a dictator himself. He seems to be leading the charge to get the trio and likely a big showdown with Mason.
Where have you seen Marton Csokas before?
The New Zealand actor has made a career playing villainous roles in movies like XXX, Aeon Flux, Kingdom of Heaven, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, and more. He’s also graced TV such as Xena Warrior Princess, Rogue and Into the Badlands. That makes him perfect for the movie’s villain.
It looks like a small role of Mason’s boss at the security company that hires him for this simple job that quickly gets complicated. But, he might get more time if Mason tries to reach him for help.
Where have you seen Christan Slater before?
Since his breakout in the 1988 cult hit Heathers, Christian Slater has been a regular face in movies and TV for decades. His credits are lengthy, including Interview With the Vampire, True Romance, Broken Arrow, and TV shows such as Mr. Robot (which won him a Golden Globe award) and a voice on Archer. His role seems small but fun.
With such a great cast, it’s likely Freelance is a sleeper action comedy that should be a nice watch. The movie premieres in theaters on Friday, Oct. 27.
