Heavy rain and strong wind watches in place for parts of the country
The west of the South Island and parts of the North Island will see heavy rain and strong winds in place from Tuesday morning. MetService has issued weather warnings for parts of the North Island and the west of the South Island, with heavy rain and strong winds expected from Tuesday. The warnings are expected to last until 3am Wednesday. For parts of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, conditions will be mostly cloudy, with isolated showers expected to become more widespread on Tuesday afternoon. Meanwhile, the Westland District to south of Otira in the South is under heavy rain warnings, with periods of heavy rain expected and possible thunderstorms expected. In the South, a heavy rain watch is also in place for Buller and Tasman. The first tropical cyclone of the new cyclone season has arrived in the southwest Pacific and is not expected to come anywhere near New Zealand.

MetService has issued weather warnings for parts of the North Island and the west of the South Island.
Say goodbye to the long weekend: from Tuesday, parts of the North Island and west of the South Island will see dense rain and strong winds start the working week off.
MetService has issued heavy rain warnings beginning at 9am Tuesday for the Westland District to south of Otira, in the South Island, with periods of heavy rain and possible thunderstorms expected.
In the ranges, rainfall may approach warning criteria.
The warning is expected to last until 3am Wednesday.
For Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, conditions are mostly cloudy with isolated showers becoming more widespread on Tuesday afternoon, kicking off around 2pm.
Northerly winds will become fresh throughout the afternoon and evening.
For those catching the bus, train or ferry home from mahi this afternoon, bring a raincoat.
For Kirikiriroa Hamilton, it's much of the same.
Conditions will be mostly cloudy with occasional showers kicking off around 5pm, and northwesterly winds.
The town’s high is 20C, with a low of 13C.
Te-Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington will be cloudy with isolated showers, turning to rain in the evening.
Gale force winds are expected in parts of the city, rising to 100kph.
There are also watches in place for the Tararua Range near Wellington and Mount Taranaki, beginning at 8pm Tuesday and expected to last until 6am Wednesday, with periods of heavy rain and possible thunderstorms that may approach warning criteria.
In the South Island, from 1pm on Tuesday to 6am Wednesday, a heavy rain watch is also in place for Buller and Tasman (northwest of Motueka) with similar criteria to the watch in Westland.
Ōtautahi Christchurch will see high cloud and the chance of light rain this morning and evening, but will otherwise be fine. Enjoy the sun for the rest of the country.
Ōtepoti Dunedin will have areas of morning low cloud, but will otherwise have partly cloudy skies. The odd shower may take place from the late morning, which can possibly turn heavy.
The first tropical cyclone of the new cyclone season has arrived in the southwest Pacific – before the official start of the season in November.
Tropical cyclone Lola, named by the Nadi tropical cyclone centre, is not expected to come anywhere near New Zealand, MetService meteorologist Alwyn Bakker said.
Lola, ranked a category four cyclone by the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department, is set to hit the island nation
“Heavy rainfalls with flash flooding are expected over low lying areas and areas close to river banks, including coastal flooding over Vanuatu group today and continuing tomorrow. Very rough seas with heavy to phenomenal swells are expected over all Vanuatu waters,” the department said on Tuesday morning.
There are strong wind watches for Wairarapa (south of Carterton), Wellington and the Marlborough Sounds from 5pm Tuesday to 4am Wednesday.
These areas will see north-westerlies which may approach severe gales in exposed places.
